“Satan, you toothless old pimp, you can retire.”

—from “The Supreme Court and Everybody Else Throwing Idle Hands Around Here,” by Jacqueline Allen Trimble

Join us for "Writing Your South," an exclusive quarterly series of two-hour online seminars hosted by Salvation South. In these intimate sessions, you'll have the rare opportunity to engage directly with acclaimed Southern authors as they share their unique perspectives on capturing the essence of the South in their writing.

On September 25 at 6 pm EDT, Writing Your South will welcome the award-winning Alabama poet Jacqueline Allen Trimble, author of two collections of poetry, 2016's American Happiness and 2022's How to Survive the Apocalypse. Over the last year, Trimble has contributed four poems to Salvation South.

Jackie will join Salvation South poetry editor Andy Fogle and editor-in-chief Chuck Reece in an eye-opening conversation about how she writes poetry that forcefully and fiercely lays out her own visions for and views of the South.

Praise for Jacqueline Allen Trimble's American Happiness:

"Jacqueline Trimble waited a long time to publish this first book, but she is right on time. I longed for her kind of poetry, these cut-to-the-flesh poems, this verse that sings the old-time religion of difficult truths with new courage and utter sister-beauty. And I am so grateful for her gift, her grown woman poetics."

—Honorée Fanonne Jeffers, author of The Love Songs of W.E.B. DuBois, a 2021 Oprah's Book Club pick

"It is cause for celebration that Ms. Trimble is making poetry that is timely and timeless, elegant and brutal, wise and innocent."

—Mark Childress, author of Crazy in Alabama

Praise for How to Survive the Apocalypse:

Black poets have always told the truth with God in one hand and blood in the other, and Jacqueline Trimble sits squarely in that tradition with How to Survive the Apocalypse. Her poems, which come from the gut, which come from the throat, which come from the beating heart of a Black woman making meaning out of the soured meal of America, are a wonder to behold.”

—Ashley M. Jones, Poet Laureate of Alabama and author of Reparations Now!
